EDF Energy is one of the UK’s largest energy companies and its largest producer of low-carbon electricity. A wholly-owned subsidiary of the EDF Group, one of Europe's largest energy groups, we generate around one fifth of the UK's electricity and employ around 15,000 people. We supply electricity and gas to around 5.5 million residential and business customers, making us the biggest supplier of electricity by volume.
The company is organised into the following business units:
Existing Nuclear operates eight nuclear power stations in the UK with a combined capacity of almost 9,000 megawatts – electricity that is vital to the UK economy.
Nuclear New Build which is tasked with the delivery of the new generation of nuclear plants in line with EDF’s global programme of producing safe, affordable, reliable, low-carbon production of electricity in the UK.
Energy Sourcing and Customer Supply runs power stations and wind farms, buys and sells power to meet future generation and customer needs and deals with all our energy customers.
EDF Energy as we know it today was born in 2003, But our history actually began during the years leading up to 2002, when three energy companies ─ SEEBoard, London Energy and SWEB ─ were brought together. Since then, we've grown steadily, integrating and streamlining our operations to become more responsive and effective in a fast-changing marketplace. The combination of EDF Energy and British Energy in 2009 forms one of the UK’s largest energy companies. The combined business is the UK’s largest producer of electricity. We’re now involved in some of the UK’s most important projects and developments. Growing to become one of the country’s largest energy companies in such a short time is an impressive achievement.
EDF Energy is part of EDF Group, one of the three largest energy companies in Europe. EDF Group's activities include generation, trading, transmission, distribution, supply and other energy services. It has over 38 million customers in Europe, with over 28 million of these in France. It has key business interests in Germany and Italy as well as France and the UK. EDF was founded in 1946. We believe that working throughout the energy chain gives us financial stability and greater knowledge of our customers' needs. We also believe that a long-term approach is more efficient than a short-term one. Our parent, EDF Group, guided by these principles, has invested substantially to build a strong long-term position in the UK.
We benefit from the financial strength of a large European group, as well as combined procurement capabilities, pan-European dealings for major customers, international expertise and access to significant R&D resources. Ultimately, these all add to our reputation for stability and reliability. It means our customers can rely on us to provide a safe, efficient service.
